Text

The larger document from which this is excerpted, _The Writer's Companion_, is described this way: "Welcome to English 1110 and to The Writer’s Companion: A Guide to First-Year Writing with Excerpts from Writing Analytically. In addition to readings provided by your instructor, this text will provide you with an introduction to successful writing at the university level. Each chapter focuses on a particular aspect of writing that college faculty, writing instructors, and students themselves know to be central to achieving that goal. Our purpose in writing this book was to create a text tailored to your experience in English 1110 at Ohio State, and over the semester, you will likely read every word of The Writer’s Companion. This book will allow you to explore concepts of analysis and writing style while incorporating the intellectual property of others into your writing effectively and ethically. You will find plenty of examples to work with, including sample sentences intended to delight as they help you polish your writing craft.

Chapter 1, which is excerpted here, is meant to explain English 1110 to students.
